Kansas Cosmosphere & Space Center
This world renowned space museum affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution features the largest collection of US space artifacts outside of the National Air and Space Museum and the largest collection of Russian space artifacts in the Western world and has an IMAX Dome Theater and Planetarium. The Cosmosphere is home to the actual Apollo 13 command module Odyssey, and SR-71 Blackbird spy plane, the world's largest collection of space suits, and the largest collection of Soviet space artifacts in the Western world. The Cosmosphere offers innovative astronaut training camps for the young and the young-at-heart. The Elderhostel Astronaut Training Program is for people 55 and over. The Cosmosphere consists of 105,000 square feet dedicated to space science exhibits and educational programs, including a planetarium, an IMAX® Dome Theater and the internationally recognized Hall of Space Museum. The Cosmosphere houses the most significant collection of U.S. space artifacts, outside of the National Air and Space Museum, and the largest collection of Soviet space artifacts in the Western world, allowing it to tell the story of the Space Race in a way that no other museum can. Named one of the first affiliates of the Smithsonian Institution in 1998, approximately 33,000 students visit the facility every year as part of school field trips.
