Safe Hunter Education at the Gun Range

Explain requirement that student must:

1. Wear glasses anytime he is shooting
2. Orange Hat and/or vest when hunting
3. Recommend ear protection when shooting

The Course Administrator would familiarize the guests with the gun

a. Type of gun
a Pump, Automatic, Over/Under, Double
b. Gauge of gun
c. How the gun operates
d. How to use the safety and when to disengage it
e. How to load and unload gun
f. How to carry gun

Holding the gun, the Course Administrator would discuss shooting while hunting

a. Hunt in a straight line of 3 to 4 people
b. Discuss safe shooting "window"
  1. Straight in front and to outside
  2. If in center never shoot to rear
  3. Never shoot down the line of people
  4. Never shoot low
     a. It is illegal and very unsafe
        to shoot on ground - even a
        wounded bird
     b. See blue below barrel
     c. If you shoot dog you bought it

Strongly recommend: If shooting an automatic or pump the guest never load more than 2 shells at a time.

Take the Guest to a Shooting Station

1. Hand the gun to the Guest
2. Review guns operation
3. Have Guest engage and disengage safety
4. Have Guest load and unload gun until comfortable
5. Have Guest demonstrate how to carry gun safely
6. Step to firing line, give Guest one shell and have him fire the gun
up, away and down field to get the feel of the guns motions.

Have the Guest shoot the gun

1. Have Guest step to firing line and advise as to stance and mount.
2. Give the Guest one shell and have him load and shoot at an easy, going away target.
3. Have Guest shoot at approximately 10 going away targets, coaching in regards to gun mount, stance, accuracy, follow thru, etc., until Guest breaks a target or two and is comfortable
4. Repeat approximately 10 targets as Report Doubles
5. Decide if Guest is understanding and ask if he is comfortable and has any questions

Return to Office and give a brief recap of any points the Course Administrator thinks would help the student

Safe Hunter Test

Give the 12-question test to the guest and ask him to sign, date and complete. The Course Administrator would grade the test, sign and
date. This test card would serve as Permit to shoot at this preserve.
